In 1898 Gideon Webber opened his victorian saddlery and ironmongery shop with the slogan "You can always get it at Webbers". This we believe to be as true today as it was then. His great-grandchildren continue to offer the same high standards of quality and service to residents and visitors alike.

The late Victorian and Edwardian periods saw the opening up of Dartmoor to tourism. Chagford especially welcomed the visitor with the development of hotels, board residences and apartments in the town. Gideon Webber having aquired an existing saddlery business in 1898, began extending the range of hardware, ironmongery, cycle and travel goods. The coming of the railway to Exeter and Moretonhampstead brought increased access and Webber and Sons were appointed agents for the London and South Western Railway.

A horse-drawn bus service which was soon to be followed by steam and then petrol buses ran daily to Yeoford, Moretonhampstead and Exeter stations. There were no petrol filling stations as we know them today, instead Webber and Sons sold petrol in two gallon cans and poured it directly into the tank.

Radio was then in its infancy. Webber and Sons constructed its own wireless sets powered by batteries or re-chargable accumulators. Phonographs were also sold and Webber's even cut its own records!

The purchase of next door shops in 1943 extended the property. However, requisition by the army during WW11 delayed its full potential until the mid 1950's when a major modernisation programme took place.

Today the traditional role of hardware and ironmongery has taken a lower profile. Now increased leisure time has seen expansion in clothing and rainwear. Likewise an increase in the availability of kitchen gadgets has resulted in a specialist kitchen shop. Extensive houseware and gift departments also reflect modern marketing trends.

Today Webber and Sons still cater for the traditional as well as the modern discerning visitor. A warm welcome awaits all our customers. We carry large stocks in all departments. Here are a few of our major stockists:
